Our racing season has been wowed by the crafting of amazing Pinewood Derby Cars by our scouts! This year’s District Pinewood Derby will be held in the Riverchase Galleria Mall foodcourt.

There will be FOUR categories of competition at the District PWD this year:

  • Lion/Tiger
  • Wolves
  • Bears
  • Webelos/AOL.

If your car placed 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in any division (other than outlaw) in your Pack, you are advancing to the Shelby District Pinewood Derby! All racers will receive the 2019 Shelby District Pinewood Derby Patch, and racers who place 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in their Division will receive a trophy!. Grand Finalists placing 1st, 2nd, or 3rd overall will also receive a trophy! Mountain High Outfitters will be providing some door prizes.

Please ensure you are pre-registered for the race! With track set-up and racer check-in occurring on the same day as the race, we need to have as complete a list as possible of racers prior to Wednesday, April the 10th. Click here to register.

If you did not place in your Pack’s Pinewood Derby, we highly encourage you to attend in uniform and support your fellow scouts who are racing!

The car your scout built for their 2019 Pack Race is the car being advanced to the District Derby. Significant changes such as drastically modifying the body design are not allowed. What IS allowed is repair of damage incurred in between races (gluing pieces that either fell off or broke off during or after the race), fine tuning such as adding graphite, and updates to the paint. The car should be recognizable as the car that entered your 2019 Pack Race.

Please see the Greater Alabama Council rules for 2019 car design (click here). We do not want to have to turn any cars away. You must use official BSA Pinewood Derby bodies, wheels, and axles. Use of pre-cut bodies is prohibited. There are also height, length, weight and graphite rules that apply. The Greater Alabama Council rules stand as the rules in use by Shelby District.

Uniform for the day is your clean and neat Field Uniform (Class A). Family members are encouraged to wear their Pack’s activity shirt.

Track Set-up is from 8 AM – 10 AM Saturday, April the 13th.

Racer Check-in will be from 10 AM – 12 PM on Saturday, April the 13th. Racers should be in attendance when checking in their cars. There is a $7 racer registration fee to cover the costs of the awards and patches. Early registration is highly encouraged for event planning. Your car must be ready to race upon check-in.

The 2019 Shelby District Pinewood Derby will commence at 1 PM Saturday, April the 13th.

The racers will compete at the following times:

1:00 PM – Webelos/AOL
2:00 PM – Bears
3:00 PM – Wolves
4:00 PM – Lions/Tigers

At the conclusion of each Division’s heats, awards will be presented immediately following the last heat. The top three times from each Division will be compared for the Overall top three winners.

Lastly, we are in need of parent volunteers for this event. If you would like to volunteer to help at the Shelby District PWD, please go to https://www.signupgenius.com/go/30e0d49aeaf2aa1fb6-shelby and see where we could use your assistance. If possible, we would like to retain the positions of the Starting Line Officials to registered adult leader

We’re SUPER excited for Pinewood Derby, and CAN’T WAIT to see the designs the scouts come up with this year!

YIS,

Tim McPhail
Assistant Cubmaster, 2019 Race Commissioner
