VETERANS DAY PARADE – Friday, November 11, 2016
REGISTRATION DEADLINE: Friday, November 4th
The Birmingham Veterans Day parade is a great opportunity to create lifelong memories for all Scouts by demonstrating our patriotism and love for flag and country in the nation’s largest and oldest Veterans Day parade, started in 1947. Scouts are invited to walk in the parade and packs, troops, and crews are invited to enter floats. We’re encouraging maximum participation this year to ensure we have sufficient Boy Scouts volunteering as one of 55 flag carriers.
REGISTRATION: Register with the Greater Alabama Council. Email form to Heather Mayfield by Friday, November 4.
ASSEMBLY: Assemble at the parking lot at the corner of 19th Street, North and 8th Avenue. This is where the parade will start and we expect to be stepping off about 1:45PM. On-street parking is available – the sooner you arrive, the shorter your walk.
FLAG FORMATION: We’ll be recruiting approximately 55 Boy Scouts as flag carriers to lead the Scout formation. If your troop as a whole and/or individual Boy Scouts desire to be flag carriers, please assemble at 19th Street, North and 8th Avenue North, no later than 12:30pm. Flag carriers must be in full and correct uniform.
The point of contact for the flag formation is Rick DeFilippo, Cub Master Pack 326, (205) 823-3000 or .
In your email, please use subject line (all capital letters): “SCOUT VETERANS DAY FLAG FORMATION.” We will also need six Scout leaders in uniform to guide the flag formation and ensure safety. If interested please email me in advance and meet at the assembly area.
UNIT FLAGS TO CARRY: The flag formation will be followed by troops and then packs. For safety reasons, vehicles will not be allowed within the Scout parade contingent. Similar to last year, Scouts will be expected to walk the 1.5 mile casual pace parade route. Since the American flag and Alabama flag will be included in the leading Scout formation, please ONLY march with your unit flag.
WATER: Be sure to bring water, as none will be provided. There will be a small amount of down time as the Scouting contingent joins the larger parade. Be prepared with snacks, games, or other activities to keep Scouts occupied.
UNIFORM: The Scout uniform is the only proper attire for the parade.
NO CANDY: No one may throw candy during the parade.
PARADE LENGTH: The parade route will be 1.5 miles.
PATCHES: Veteran’s Day 2016 patches will be available for sale at the assembly area 19th Street, North and 8th Avenue parking lot
